ASKED AND ANSWERED
I think I feed my kids well. Do kids really need extra vitamins and minerals in their diet?
Everyone needs vitamins and minerals. They help release energy from our food and are important for muscles, bones, blood and other vital tissues. Without them, we simply can’t maintain good health and normal growth. Since our bodies don’t store all essential vitamins and minerals, some have to be replenished regularly. And in the active, growing years of childhood, kids may need certain vitamins and minerals replenished every day. Unfortunately, our eating habits don’t guarantee that we always get the vitamins and minerals we need from food alone. Multiple vitamins serve as a supplement to help fill vitamin and mineral gaps when diet is not enough.
What are the benefits of the different vitamins and minerals?
Here’s an at-a-glance chart that describes the vitamins and minerals in FlintstonesTM Multivitamins. You can read more about them here and see which appear in our various FlintstonesTM formulas.
VITAMIN | ROLE |
Vitamin A | It is important to make sure our bodies have enough of Vitamin A as it helps with a wide range of functions including maintaining normal eyesight, healthy skin and immune function. |
Vitamin A as beta-carotene | It is important to make sure our bodies have enough of Vitamin A as it helps with a wide range of functions including maintaining normal eyesight, healthy skin and immune function. |
Thiamin (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Niacin, Vitamin B6, Pantothenic Acid and Biotin | B Vitamins help to maintain the body's ability to metabolize nutrients. |
Vitamin B12 | Essential for normal growth of body as well as maintaining blood formation. Plant foods have no Vitamin B12, so vegetarians need to ensure they get enough of this vitamin. |
Folic Acid | Folic acid (or folate), also known as Vitamin B9, plays a role in promoting normal red blood cell formation and making and repairing damage to DNA, the genetic material in all cells. |
Vitamin C | Unlike most animals, our bodies are unable to make Vitamin C, so it must be added to our diets. Vitamin C is an antioxidant for good health and helps to maintain the body’s immune function. |
Vitamin E | Vitamin E is an antioxidant and also has a role in immune function. |
Vitamin D | Vitamin D deficiency is common among Canadians due to limited sunlight exposure and diet intake. Making sure we get enough Vitamin D helps the body to get enough calcium to grow strong bones and teeth. It also has a role in supporting the immune system. |
MINERALS | ROLE |
Zinc | Zinc participates in diverse functions in the body including maintenance of healthy skin and immune function. |
Iron | Iron in the blood helps transport oxygen throughout the body and is used in blood formation. |
Calcium | Calcium provides structure to bones and teeth and is important for bone health. It plays an important role in muscle contraction and the transmission of nerve impulses. |
Iodine | Iodine is best known for keeping the thyroid gland healthy. Thyroid gland is located in the neck and helps to control hormones and how energy is used. |

What are antioxidants?
Every day you’re exposed to cell-damaging molecules (called “free radicals”) generated by pollution, smoke, sunlight and even your own body when you work out hard or convert food to energy. Antioxidants, such as Vitamins C and E, can help neutralize these free radicals and maintain a certain balance. Diets high in vegetables and fruits are good sources of antioxidants.

How long will vitamins stay in their system and be absorbed?
The body is able to absorb as much of the water-soluble vitamins as needed (all B and C vitamins) and the excess amounts are excreted through the urine. Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D and E) are stored in fat cells and in the liver. When there aren’t enough vitamins in the diet, the body will automatically absorb more from the supplements.
